“But the most elaborate costumes flanked Lila Downs, a neo-traditionalist Mexican singer whose “Pecados y Milagros” was named best folk album; she sang “Zapata Se Queda” with the Colombian folk singer Totó la Momposina and the Mexican accordionist Celso Piña, as a lavish Day of the Dead procession filled the aisles and the stage.” -Jon Pareles, New York Times
The ceremony closed with artists Pitpull and Dominican rapper Sensato performing Sak Noel’s collaboration “Crazy People” as dancers shimmied the night away.

This marks his third win in a row since claiming the top spot in the 75th Readers Poll. Established in 1934, DownBeat’s Annual Readers Poll award is a prestigious honor. The ‘percussion’ category was initiated in 1973 in honor of Airto. Since then, he has won Best Percussionist multiple times in both the Readers and Critics polls. A Train thanks the Readers for voting and congratulates Airto on his recognition.
“The explosive debut album from Staff Benda Bilili is perhaps an example of African street music at its finest. The sound is a curious mix of Afro Rumba, Latin Rhythms and rich vocal harmonies. Each track is diverse, vibrant and wholly unique, yet the album retains a uniformity of sound and style that is both interesting and infectious…” – Johnny Lais BBC (UK)
